On 21 December 2005 Ben Duncan and Dick Chapman registered their civil partnership. They met in 1951 and have been together ever since. Here are some of their thoughts and feelings…

After 53 years together, any likening of our civil partnership registration to a wedding seems a bit ridiculous. Virginal white? Much too late for that. A best man? We are each other’s best man. Bride and groom? It’s never been quite like that for us – yet how clearly we remember our married friends in our early days making tactful attempts to figure out our relationship: “Which of you does the cooking?” they would ask, or even once, “Which of you plumps the cushions?”

We are glad we have no pre-ordained wedding formula to adhere to or reject: no bridesmaids, no confetti, no Mendelsohn’s Wedding March – and no father of the bride “giving away” one of us to the other. If we decide to throw a party to celebrate the occasion we would rather wait until the summer, when the weather should be better than on 21 December, and there’s no competition from Christmas.
