FFLAG now has a new helpline based in Cornwall. This is great news for the south west of the country because until now the nearest FFLAG helpline has been in Bristol, hundreds of miles away. 0845 652 0325
My name is Sorrel, married to James, and we have four children. Our youngest son, who is now 24, ‘came out’ when he was 20. He was away in New Zealand at the time, and my instinct was to get on a plane immediately and fly half way round the world to be with him. Common sense prevailed and we waited until he flew home a few weeks later – and at last we could tell him face to face how much we loved and supported him. I am so pleased to be embarking on running a helpline in Cornwall. Cornwall always seems a long way from anywhere – which is lovely most of the time – however there is a downside, which is of a sense of isolation. I really hope that having a local point of contact will help parents and families feel supported and understood. In the short time that I have been actively meeting representatives from young peoples’ organisations in Cornwall, it is apparent that there are some very homophobic views that need to be challenged. I am quickly realising how isolated young LGB people and their families must feel when they hear such negative comments. I have a professional background of supporting families and children – and for some years I worked as a Relate counsellor. As a somewhat ‘mature student’ I am embarking on the final year of a BSc Hons degree in Health and Social Care Management. I feel privileged to be part of the FFLAG ‘family’ and look forward to flying the flag here in Cornwall. Sorrel Atkinson |
