Parenting Project
Parenting Project: Working with Parents of LGBT People

Why a Parenting Project?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) people are increasingly likely to explore their sexuality at an early age, while trans (T) people do likewise with their gender identity. Positive parental support of their sexuality or gender identity is critical for young people in terms of outcomes like healthy identity, forming relationships and life success. Equally, many older LGBT people may face difficulties in disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity to their parents.

What will the Parenting Project do?
The Parenting Project will be focused on Croydon, Greenwich, Hackney and Southwark, as well as working with FFLAG (www.fflag.org.uk) across London, to develop services for parents of LGBT people. The Parenting Project will work with parents to:
  • Assist and develop their understanding and ability to positively support their child around sexual orientation and/or gender identity and development needs, and
  • Help LGBT people in better relating to their parents
  • Raise awareness of these issues in both generic and LGBT services
The Parenting Project is funded by the Parenting Fund till June 2008.

Making Referrals
The Parenting Project will open from the 5th March 2007. Individuals can self-refer, while agencies or organisations can request a referral form.
