| An evening with Julian Clary |
|
Julian Clary visited Cornwall in May, and starred in his own show ‘An Evening with ..…Julian Clary’ at The Hall for Cornwall in Truro. He kindly gave his permission for FFLAG to have a display stand for the evening. He played to a full house and shared an evening of wit, humour and moving insights with a hugely appreciative audience. Prior to the show and at the interval I handed out leaflets and posters to people who approached the stand. One lady came up to me and said the stand was all very interesting, but she herself didn’t know anyone who was gay…. after chatting with her a while and explaining that approximately 7% of the population is lesbian, gay or bisexual, she thought that perhaps she knew several people and asked to take away a handful of our leaflets. The stand itself drew many appreciative comments from people saying what a pleasant surprise it was to have lesbian and gay issues publicised. Commenting on the FFLAG publication ‘How do I Tell My Parents?’, one visitor to the stand asked if we had a publication ‘ How do I Tell My Children?’. Something to work on for the future perhaps… For me, the highlight of the evening was meeting Julian after the show. He visited the stand and we chatted about FFLAG’s work – and he even asked if he could have one of our publications. I would like to thank Marc Sinden who produced Julian’s show for all his support, and also the staff at Hall for Cornwall who were so helpful. But above all I would like to say a big thank you to Julian who gave FFLAG in Cornwall a rare opportunity to share our work with such a wide audience.
