FFLAG’s manifesto plea to Britain’s politicians

FFLAG has written to all the major political parties asking them to include a commitment to ban conversion “therapy” in their manifestos. Here is the text of our letter.

FFLAG is a parent-led national charity founded in 1989 that supports and speaks for families with LGBTQ+ members. Our experience of helping parents to understand and accept their LGBTQ+ children began with the pioneering work of our first President, Rose Robertson, in the 1960s.

Sixty years of accumulated experience has told us that the sexuality and gender identity of our children is not chosen and cannot be changed. Among our number are parents who initially sought to change their children’s declared identity and now deeply regret the harm this caused.

So-called ‘conversion therapy’ is widely recognised as harmful. The UK Government’s commissioned research has shown mounting evidence of its negative impact on mental health.  Conversion practices ought by now to have been banned in our country, as it has been in many others.

FFLAG calls upon the _____ Party to include in your General Election manifesto an unequivocal commitment to ban all conversion practices. We are particularly concerned that such a commitment explicitly includes transgender and non-binary identities as well as lesbian, gay and bisexual identities.

Please make this election the last one at which we need to plead for our LGBTQ+ children (of all ages) to be shielded from the damaging effects of attempts to change who they truly are.
